49ers held tryouts for 5 players after Jake Tonges and Alfred Collins’ injuries

The San Francisco 49ers recently invited five players for a tryout after injuries to tight end Jake Tonges and defensive tackle Alfred Collins. The team had previously added a defensive tackle to their practice squad on Tuesday. During the tryout, the 49ers assessed three tight ends and two defensive tackles.

Lawrence Cager, a 29-year-old tight end who stands at 6’5” and weighs 220 pounds, has been in the NFL since 2020. However, he hasn't played a regular-season game since 2023. Cager spent his entire NFL career with the Jets and Giants, achieving his most successful season in 2022 with 13 catches for 118 yards.

Tanner Conner, undrafted in the 2022 draft, joined the 49ers' tryout despite having limited playing time. Standing 6’3” and weighing 232 pounds, Conner spent his rookie season with the Dolphins, catching nine passes for 91 yards. Last season, he continued to play for the Dolphins, scoring nine catches for 91 yards.

Jack Stoll, another tight end, had a successful career spanning from 2021 to 2024 with the Eagles and Saints. He started four games with the Saints in 2024, contributing six catches for 46 yards. Throughout his career, Stoll has amassed 32 starts. Given his size and experience, Stoll appears to have the best chance among the five players to secure a roster spot.

Larry Ogunjobi, a 32-year-old defensive tackle with 6’3” and 305 pounds, has been part of the NFL since 2017. The 49ers recently worked him out, as he recently played for the Bills in 2025. Ogunjobi showcased his ability to get five tackles for loss last season.

Daniel Ekuale, also 32 and 6’3” with 300 pounds, is another player who participated in the tryout. His experience, however, is not as extensive compared to Ogunjobi. Ekuale played in 16 games for the Patriots in 2024 and hasn't started more than four games in any other season since joining the NFL in 2019. Ekuale was also with the Steelers last year.
