12 in Ireland affected as Revolut leak exposes passport, bank data

A data breach in Ireland has exposed sensitive personal information of 12 Revolut account holders, according to the UK fintech company. Revolut disclosed that the leak occurred after it mistakenly complied with data requests from a fraudulent email that appeared to be from a government agency. The leaked data contained personal details such as full names, dates of birth, occupations, addresses, and even passport and driver's license information.

Revolut emphasized that their systems and customer funds remained unaffected by the incident. The company acted swiftly, blocking the fraudulent email and notifying the relevant authorities. Revolut confirmed that approximately 680 account holders globally were affected by the data breach. The company, which boasts over 80 million customers worldwide, with roughly 3.4 million based in Ireland, is actively pursuing aggressive expansion to become a licensed banking institution in major markets such as the UK, US, France, Australia, Mexico, and Peru.

Revolut is expected to undergo an initial public offering in 2028, with a recent valuation of $75 billion following a significant share sale last November. The fintech has recently secured approval to offer crypto services in the United Arab Emirates, adding to its extensive reach among crypto customers. Additionally, Revolut recently launched its own euro-backed stablecoin called EURR.
