Zverev wins US Open to earn second Grand Slam victory

Alexander Zverev transformed his emotional US Open collapse six years ago into a triumphant victory. Six years prior, the German top seed lost a match at the US Open after serving for the title, a heartbreaking defeat to Dominic Thiem. This time around, Zverev was supported not only by his American opponent Ben Shelton and the 24,000-strong crowd, but also by his Grand Slam champion status, following his French Open win in June.

He was so focused that he didn't realize he had won the match until his team informed him. Zverev has attributed his improved performance to his intense concentration, stating that he played the next point without worrying about the score, as advised by tennis coaches. After clinching the victory, Zverev acknowledged his strong mental resilience and praised his mother for her unwavering support, particularly after being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as a child.

The victory has propelled Zverev to the top of the ATP rankings, and he now holds the prestigious world number one title. However, his journey to success has not been without controversy, as he was fined for a past altercation with his ex-partner and has faced allegations of physical violence and controlling behavior from a former girlfriend.
