Who is Dude 44 Bravo? US Air Force officer shot down in Iran reveals harrowing story of survival behind enemy lines

A US Air Force colonel, known by his mission call sign "Dude 44 Bravo," has recounted his harrowing tale of survival after his fighter jet was shot down in Iran. The incident occurred on April 2, during the war with Iran, when the aircraft was struck by an Iranian shoulder-fired missile while on a mission near the city of Isfahan.

Colonel "Bravo" and his pilot, known as "Alpha," ejected from the doomed F-15E Strike Eagle, but Bravo's parachute failed upon impact, leaving him to free-fall at speeds of 70-100 mph. Breaking his back, an arm, and a shoulder upon landing, Bravo immediately began using his Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) training to evade capture.

For over 48 hours, he hid in a mountain crevice, using his locator beacon sparingly and relying on the support of the CIA to avoid detection. Despite his injuries, Bravo moved toward safety, but Iranian forces came within a few hundred meters of his hiding spot. Through a CIA-led deception operation and the deployment of secret technology, Bravo's exact location was eventually identified.

US Special Operations forces constructed a makeshift landing strip within Iran for the rescue, but two C-130 aircraft became grounded, necessitating the dispatch of additional aircraft. The $100 million aircraft and helicopters were later destroyed to prevent Iranian access to their advanced technology. Colonel Bravo was ultimately rescued 50 hours after his jet was shot down, on Easter Sunday, describing the moment as "one of the greatest moments of my life."

He emphasized that his survival story is a testament to teamwork, training, faith, and the leadership of America in upholding its commitment to never leave a man behind.
