Washington’s Kennedy Center faces bankruptcy, possible closure

The Kennedy Center, named after former President John F. Kennedy, faces potential bankruptcy and closure, according to a Washington Post report. The center's board of trustees is set to vote on Tuesday to determine the fate of the main building due to financial and safety concerns. Documents suggest the center could struggle to pay its workforce and maintain its facilities within weeks.

To secure funding, the board is proposing to publicly acknowledge President Donald Trump's role in the building's renovation by adding his name to the institution's exterior.

Trump assumed the role of chairman of the Kennedy Center shortly after beginning his second term. In December, the center's board, which Trump handpicked, voted to rename the venue the "Trump-Kennedy Center." However, this decision was later challenged in court. Since Trump's takeover, several artists have canceled performances at the venue, and ticket sales have plummeted to their lowest levels since the Covid pandemic.

The Kennedy Center had projected $220 million in revenue, but is set to collect only about $124 million, leaving a $23 million deficit even after significant spending cuts. Additionally, the building suffered damage in a recent severe storm, with a section of ceiling plaster falling from the Grand Foyer. The center has blamed decades of neglect and deferred maintenance on previous leadership for these issues.

The Kennedy Center's spokesperson declined to comment on the Post's reporting and referred to a statement from spokesperson Roma Daravi, who attributed the center's struggles to "decades of neglect and deferred maintenance by the previous leadership." However, the spokesperson added that adding Trump's name to the building could attract new donors and raise additional funds for the center's renovation.
