UN Security Council to hold meeting on AI

The UN Security Council is set to convene a meeting on artificial intelligence next week, in response to escalating global concerns over the rapid advancement of the technology, according to a French diplomatic source. The gathering will coincide with the UN General Assembly, where numerous world leaders are expected to be present at the UN headquarters in New York. France currently holds the rotating presidency of the security council.

The meeting aims to address the dual concerns surrounding AI: the existential threat it poses to global security and the potential risks to children. The diplomatic source emphasized the strong apprehensions regarding AI's impact on children, indicating the gravity of the issue.

As the technology sector faces mounting pressure, some AI industry leaders have called for more stringent regulations to curb its development. However, US President Donald Trump dismissed these concerns on Monday, labeling them a hoax and a sick conspiracy.

The UN General Assembly will also focus on key events in Gaza, Lebanon, and Ukraine. France, serving as the monthly head of the Security Council and the current G7 president, intends to advocate for multilateralism amidst the growing challenges faced by international institutions.
