UN Security Council to hold meeting on AI

The UN Security Council plans to convene a meeting on artificial intelligence next week, as international concerns mount over the rapid advancements in this technology, according to a French diplomatic source. The gathering is scheduled to take place during the UN General Assembly, when numerous world leaders will convene at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

France currently holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council and is the current president of the G7. The agenda for the meeting will address AI from two perspectives: the existential threat it poses to global security and the risks it poses to children. Concerns regarding the impact of AI on children have been particularly highlighted.

In recent weeks, the safety of AI has garnered significant attention, with some technology company executives advocating for stricter regulations to curb development. However, US President Donald Trump dismissed such concerns on Monday, dismissing them as a "hoax" and a "sick conspiracy." The UN General Assembly will also focus on events in Gaza, Lebanon, and Ukraine.

France, as the current head of the Security Council and the G7 president, aims to advocate for multilateralism during a period when international institutions are under increasing pressure.
