Three shot dead, 15 wounded ahead of polls in Philippine Muslim enclave

In a tense atmosphere ahead of elections in the Bangsamoro region of the Philippines, a deadly confrontation unfolded just before midnight. Three individuals lost their lives and fifteen others sustained injuries as gunfire erupted during a voting process. The incident occurred outside a school being utilized as a polling station in Cotabato, the regional capital.

Police chief Jibin Bongcayao revealed that the violence began as a dispute over voting position between rival political factions. The confrontation escalated from shoving, leading to a physical altercation, and ultimately culminated in gunfire.

The participants involved in the shooting were members of rival political parties that emerged from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), a group that fought for decades to secure regional autonomy in the predominantly Catholic nation. Cotabato police chief Bongcayao noted that the men were from these rival parties, intensifying the already volatile situation.

Recognizing the significance of a peaceful election in this region marred by political unrest, party leaders emphasized that a harmonious vote would be deemed a success. To counter potential violence, security measures have been significantly heightened across the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). Over 20,000 personnel have been deployed to the voting areas, and rapid response teams have been assembled to swiftly address any emerging conflicts.

Recent incidents underscore the volatile nature of the region. Just last month, an ambush on a motorcade carrying the region's interim chief minister, appointed by President Ferdinand Marcos, left a lasting impact. Additionally, a man tragically died in a hospital in the early hours of Monday following an explosion near another polling station. Police are actively investigating the causes of these incidents, as the elections carry immense importance for the future of the Bangsamoro region.
