FG seeks extension of amnesty for overstayed Nigerians in India

Nigeria and India have pledged to enhance their bilateral ties, with trade, consular issues, education, and cultural cooperation taking center stage during talks between their foreign ministers at the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi. The discussions, hosted by India on the theme "Building Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability," emphasized the welfare of Nigerians living in India, particularly those who have exceeded their visa validity.

Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, urged for a prolongation of the current amnesty program, aiming to facilitate the voluntary return of overstayed Nigerians without facing penalties. The ministers also contemplated signing a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons, which would facilitate the orderly transfer of eligible prisoners between the two nations.

In terms of economic cooperation, they discussed expanding trade and investment while highlighting the importance of deepening mutually beneficial economic partnerships. They also recognized the significance of education and cultural exchanges in fostering stronger people-to-people connections, with the aim of promoting mutual understanding and opening up more opportunities for citizens of both countries.
