Tangguh permohonan pengampunan Najib budi bicara Agong, kata PM

Perdana Menteri Anwar Ibrahim has clarified that Yang di-Pertuan Agong has permitted Najib Razak's apology to be postponed until the upcoming meeting of the Federal Territory Conciliation Body, as stated by the Head of the Prime Minister's Legal Department. Anwar emphasized that his role is to consider matters based on law and advice from the Attorney-General, while the Agong has the discretion to take into account all relevant factors during the conciliation body's meeting.

While acknowledging that the matter is subject to the Agong's discretion and authority in the conciliation body meeting, Anwar also noted that the country still has numerous corruption cases being handled, and the process is relatively fast. He also pointed out that the Agong stressed the need for stronger measures against corruption, particularly in relation to Tabungan Haji and Felda.

Anwar responded to PAS Deputy Chief Takiyuddin Hassan's call for the government to explain the postponement of Najib's apology request. Takiyuddin claimed that the postponement would not occur unless a member of the conciliation body requested it or challenged the petition. Anwar suggested that PAS should understand the rules of the Conciliation Body before making such accusations.

He also noted that PAS should not view the matter solely as a personal issue against Najib, as there are other corruption cases pending. Anwar acknowledged the political considerations surrounding Najib, including the stance of several Umno leaders, but reaffirmed his commitment to the rule of law and the Constitution. Najib, 73, was sentenced to 12 years in prison and fined RM210 million for misusing RM42 million from SRC International and sentenced to 15 years in prison and fined RM11.38 billion for misusing 1MDB funds, but is currently appealing the latter.
