Russia strikes Ukraine with drones as Poland warns of 'escalation'

A drone strike on a train traveling from Warsaw to Ukraine near the border on Sunday was allegedly aimed at coercing Western nations to halt their support for Kyiv, according to the EU’s top diplomat. Kaja Kallas, quoted by reporters upon her arrival in Finland for an Arctic summit, stated that the attack was intended to scare Western countries into ceasing their assistance to Ukraine and discourage them from demonstrating support through demonstrations.

The French Foreign Minister, Jean-Noël Barrot, echoed these sentiments, asserting that the strikes were designed to intimidate Europeans, discourage them, and divide them. The train was hit two kilometers from the frontier in Ukraine's Volyn region, where Ukraine's state rail operator confirmed the incident. Although there were no casualties, the attack occurred shortly after a train carrying prominent Western officials and advisers had passed along the same route, raising suspicions that the diplomatic train could have been the intended target.

Ukraine's rail operator stated it is "quite likely that the target of this Russian drone could also have been the diplomatic train." Among the passengers were former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, former CIA director David Petraeus, and UK National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell. The Russian defense ministry claimed the drone targeted railway infrastructure in western Ukraine used for "transporting military cargo" from Europe.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha responded to the border strikes by stating on X that Russian forces are "knocking directly on the doors of the EU and NATO," urging Ukraine's allies to "throw the full weight of your sanctions at Putin's aggressive regime." Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk had previously warned of forthcoming threats to Europe's borders following a Russian strike at a Moldova-Ukraine border crossing that resulted in two deaths.

Tusk cautioned that Russia might engage in similar actions targeting border crossings with Ukraine in other countries, including Poland. Russia has also been linked to an explosive-laden drone found near Leipzig airport in Germany and a sea drone destroyed by Romania in the Black Sea, as well as reports of an assassination plot against the head of German arms producer Rheinmetall.
