Punjab Orders to Seize Uncovered Sand Trolleys

The Punjab government has announced plans to seize uncovered sand trolleys starting September 30, and to close commercial kitchens and event venues without suction hoods from October 10. This move is part of a broader effort to tackle pollution, dust, crop residue burning, industrial emissions, and traffic disruptions in anticipation of the annual smog season.

To combat these issues, authorities have been actively working to improve road conditions. In a single day, they have sprayed water on 1,122 kilometers of roads, repaired or constructed 219 road shoulders to help minimize dust and pollution.

Additionally, the authorities have taken action against air pollution. They have issued 251 notices and imposed fines totaling Rs 37,500 for burning waste, tires, rubber, and plastic. A separate crackdown has been launched to address encroachment and illegal activities that cause traffic obstructions. In Faisalabad division, industrial units and incinerators are being monitored via live CCTV surveillance, with immediate action taken where black smoke is detected.

In Harappa, a new model has been introduced where rice residue is converted into bales using machines instead of being burned in fields. Meanwhile, air quality readings from various parts of Lahore have shown significant variation. While the Punjab University recorded the highest AQI of 208, which is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, Model Town and Multan Road both recorded an AQI of 74, and Safari Park and GT Road each had an AQI of 72.

Near Wagah Border, the AQI was measured at 70, and Kahna Nau, Bagh Road, Shahdara, and DHA Phase 6 all showed readings in the moderate range.
