President Mahama inspects proposed site for Upper West Regional Airport

President John Mahama visited the proposed location for the Upper West Regional Airport in Wa on Saturday as part of his two-day tour of the Upper West Region. He observed the architectural drawings and noted that the current airport is no longer suitable for modern needs, having once been a primary air route for Wa-Nadowli flights that have since been re-routed.

He highlighted that plans to build a new airport for Wa and the region have been in the works for some time. President Mahama affirmed that the Ghana Airports Company had secured the necessary funds for the project, so financing was not a concern. He stated that construction would soon commence, aiming to shorten travel time from Wa to Accra from nine to ten hours to approximately one hour and fifteen minutes.

He acknowledged that stakeholders consider long-term planning, drawing a parallel with the expansion of Accra International Airport from rural lands to congested areas, and predicted that the new Upper West Regional Airport would promote growth and expansion in the region. The President emphasized that the airport would be equipped with modern navigational aids, including runway lighting for safe day and night operations.
