NNPC targets 600tcf gas reserves, 12Bcf/d output by 2030

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPCL) has revealed ambitious plans to significantly boost Nigeria’s gas reserves and production capacities by 2030. According to the NNPCL Executive Vice President, Gas, Power & New Energy, Olalekan Ogunleye, the company aims to increase the country's gas reserves from the current 215 trillion cubic feet (tcf) to over 600 tcf, and raise national production to 12 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) by 2030.

Ogunleye explained that these targets were part of a broader strategy to position Nigeria as a leading global gas hub. He affirmed that the plan, known as the Gas Master Plan (GMP), would leverage Nigeria’s proven gas reserves to fuel domestic industrialization and expand its export capabilities. The NNPCL executive also highlighted the company's commitment to reinforcing coordination through the Petroleum Industry Act, Decade of Gas Framework, and the GMP, with a near-term goal of increasing national gas production to 10 Bcf/d by 2027 and 12 Bcf/d by 2030.

Nigeria’s strategic location along the Atlantic Basin and its substantial gas resource base have positioned it as a reliable global supplier of gas, with existing LNG trains already exporting over 6,000 cargoes since 1999. Ogunleye emphasized the dual benefits of domestic gas utilization and export, noting that the strategy would generate foreign exchange, boost energy security, and improve overall economic wellbeing.
