Man drowns while fleeing suspected cultists in Lagos

A man named Opeyemi drowned after allegedly jumping into a river while trying to escape from suspected cultists in Lagos. According to a police source, the incident occurred on Saturday, September 12, in the Agility area of Mile 12, Lagos State. Opeyemi was reportedly chased by a group of men, forcing him to seek refuge in the river in an attempt to evade his pursuers.

A resident reported that Opeyemi was chased by suspected cultists who caught and attacked him before he jumped into the river to escape. Although some residents claimed Opeyemi was under the influence of a substance at the time, others stated that he was on his way to purchase an item when the attack occurred. An anti-cultism advocacy platform, Naija Confra, presented a different version, stating that some witnesses believed Opeyemi had jumped into the river himself, while others reported that he was chased and attacked.

The exact circumstances of the incident remain unclear, as conflicting accounts have yet to be independently verified. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, has yet to respond to inquiries about the matter as of the time of filing this report.
