Malaysia mulls accepting 2nd vessel from US Coast Guard

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia is evaluating Washington's proposal to receive another vessel from the US Coast Guard in order to enhance the capabilities of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA). Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail revealed that a decision will be made following an assessment of the vessel to confirm its suitability for MMEA and ensure its maintenance costs are manageable.

The Secretary-General of the ministry will conduct the technical inspections alongside specialists from MMEA and engineers. The offer of the second vessel came after the Malaysian government accepted the first ship provided by the US Coast Guard last year, which required some upgrades, with a portion of the expenses partially funded by the US.

At a press conference, Saifuddin stated that the first vessel needed modifications, and the costs were partially covered by the US. Home Minister Saifuddin also announced that the finance ministry has approved a proposal to raise the current hourly allowance of RM8 for People's Volunteer Corps (Rela) personnel. The new rate aims to be reasonable and takes into consideration the government's financial situation.

Over 35,000 Rela members will benefit from this increase. Additionally, Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail confirmed that an investigation has been initiated into claims made by Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Ismail Lasim regarding being coerced into signing a proclamation to remove Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir as the state ruler. The investigation is currently ongoing, and updates will be provided at a later time.
