Kuching South mayor reminds owners to seek approval for structures over drains after Jalan Mendu collapse

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has urged property owners to seek approval before constructing structures over public drains, following the collapse of an unauthorized structure on Jalan Mendu. Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng inspected the site and emphasized the safety risks associated with unauthorized structures built over drainage systems.

He reminded owners that any alterations to existing structures under the council's jurisdiction require official approval. The incident, which occurred when a seven-tonne lorry fell into a drain after the supporting structure collapsed, highlights the dangers of unapproved constructions. Wee stated that Section 136 of the Local Authorities Ordinance 1996 empowers the council to alter or demolish unauthorized structures, with the responsible party bearing the cost.

The council will continue monitoring such structures to prevent future incidents, stressing that public safety is a shared responsibility.
