Iran postpones Hormuz talks, sanctions 77 vessels amid rising tensions

On September 14, Iran postponed a meeting with Gulf nations to discuss shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, while its Persian Gulf Strait Authority sanctioned 77 vessels for allegedly violating protocols, heightening tensions in the region. Fresh attacks involving Iran, Yemen's Houthi rebels, and Saudi Arabia fueled worries over the safety of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passage for global oil supplies.

Oil prices surged more than 2.5% due to the escalating tensions and fears of further oil supply disruptions, according to Nairametrics data. The Houthi rebels in Yemen attacked Saudi Arabia, claiming it was retaliation for hundreds of Saudi airstrikes on Yemen in recent days. Iran's Persian Gulf Strait Authority published a list of 77 vessels violating Iranian protocols for the strategic waterway, warning that cooperation with sanctioned ships could also result in penalties such as fines, detention, or confiscation.

The ongoing Middle East escalation is already impacting oil prices, with crude above $100 per barrel, and higher gasoline prices in Nigeria due to the rising global costs.
