Iran-Gulf talks shelved as Oman says conditions not right

Oman has shelved plans for talks between Iran and the Gulf states, citing the need to establish a "constructive dialogue" that could lead to lasting understandings supporting regional security and stability. The meeting, initially scheduled for Monday in Salalah, Oman, has been put on hold as Iran's attacks on its Gulf neighbors and disruptions to commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz continue to fuel tensions.

Iran and Oman jointly agreed to reschedule the talks at a later date. Mohammad Ali Bak, Iran's director general for Gulf affairs, stated that the meeting would be coordinated closely with Oman. The Omani Foreign Minister, Badr Al Busaidi, emphasized that the postponement was made "in the interests of consensus," though he did not specify which countries had requested the delay.

The previous agreement between Iran and Oman aimed to manage navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, but disagreements over amendments have prevented a consensus. Saudi Arabia has raised concerns, and Bahrain has stated it will not participate in the talks. Iran remains committed to regional consultations, while Oman seeks to broker arrangements to restore safe navigation through the vital energy chokepoint.
