Explosions at arms depots in Syria are not isolated incidents, according to reports. On September 9, an explosion at a temporary weapons depot near Sarmada in northern Idlib killed 14 Defence Ministry personnel and injured over 10 others. The cause is under investigation, but the lack of a confirmed trigger does not diminish the broader issues.

Highly dangerous materials were stored close to a populated area without proper infrastructure or safeguards. The Defence Ministry acknowledged responsibility and launched an investigation, marking a departure from previous denial and blame-shifting. However, more is needed. Syria has experienced numerous similar incidents, indicating the problem extends beyond one depot.

The real test is whether investigations lead to concrete changes and swift action to prevent future explosions. Similar incidents have occurred in other locations, including a vehicle explosion in Binnish that killed at least five people on September 5. However, details about the ammunition's origin, destination, legality, and safety measures remain unclear.

Explosions have also struck weapons and ammunition sites in other parts of Idlib province, with the deadliest occurring on July 24, 2025, killing 11 and injuring 157. The investigations have identified improper storage as a problem, but it is unclear what changes have been implemented across the system. The investigations need to go beyond identifying the immediate cause and focus on institutional failures that allowed dangers to develop.

The government should conduct an emergency risk assessment of all depots and temporary collection sites, evaluate facilities based on the materials they contain, their condition, and proximity to residential areas, and ensure strict safety measures during transportation.
