Iran begins new push to 'identify and punish traitors' living abroad

Iran has launched a new initiative to identify and punish regime critics living abroad. A revamped online system will allow loyalists to report opponents to an online portal or a messenger app. Those labeled as "traitors" could face the revocation of their Iranian citizenship, according to state television. The scheme, known as Elaaj or remedy/cure, aims to protect national security and Iranian interests from anti-patriotic, separatist movements, those promoting sanctions and military attacks.

Punishments could also include cutting off financial and media access for traitors living abroad. The announcement is part of Iran's ongoing strategy to track down and intimidate expats opposing the clerical leadership in Tehran. Such labeling is a common tactic used by Iranian authorities against opposition activists abroad, though human rights groups argue these charges often carry a broad scope in national security cases.

Meanwhile, Iran maintains its stance against US and Israeli attempts to force it from power, although it remains vigilant against any public unrest that could trigger recent mass anti-regime protests. While the US and Israel seek to apply pressure on Iran, the country's supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei has urged officials to focus on Iran's "power and strength" rather than its problems.

The new crackdown comes amid ongoing tensions between the US and Iran, with the US-Iran war still unresolved. Recent diplomatic attempts, such as a planned meeting between Iran and Gulf Arab nations, have been canceled due to uncertainties. The economic situation in Iran remains fragile, with US sanctions and geopolitical uncertainties contributing to the strain.
