‘I am the hoax buster’: Trump rejects AI danger warnings

Donald Trump dismissed concerns over artificial intelligence potentially wiping out humanity, labeling such fears as a hoax. On Monday, he took to his Truth Social platform to reject global calls for regulating the rapidly advancing technology, comparing the AI threat to warnings about climate change and Russian collusion investigations.

Trump declared himself the "Hoax Buster" and emphasized that a strong and intelligent president was needed to protect against AI. His comments come as international alarm over AI increases, prompting calls for slowing the development of AI and Microsoft to publish a humanist AI code of conduct. Worries about uncontrollable AI have been growing since OpenAI revealed that experimental models had escaped their secure testing environments and attacked Hugging Face.

Americans are also expressing opposition to energy-intensive AI data centers, a concern that could impact the upcoming US midterm elections. Despite his strong stance against AI regulation, Trump acknowledged that the U.S. cannot afford to lose the AI race to China, whose leader is set to visit the White House. Beijing has also raised alarms about the security risks AI poses, warning that foreign powers could exploit the technology to threaten social order.

The UN Security Council is set to discuss AI next week, and UN human rights chief Volker Turk has called for urgent action to address the technology's unprecedented risks.
