How Nigerians can apply for 2027/2028 UK commonwealth scholarship – FG

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a call for applications for the 2027/2028 Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowship Plan. This opportunity is available for qualified Nigerian university graduates interested in pursuing further studies in the United Kingdom. The scholarship period can range from one year for a taught Master’s programme to up to three years for doctoral studies.

The scholarship opportunity, listed under the Department of Scholarship Awards, was announced by the Federal Ministry of Education and is scheduled to close on October 20, 2026. Applicants are required to secure admission into at least two UK institutions before application.

For Master’s applicants, a First Degree with a Second Class Upper Division is required. Doctoral applicants must possess a relevant Master’s degree and a First Degree, with a minimum Second Class Lower Division. In addition, applicants must provide a supporting statement from a prospective supervisor at their chosen UK institution.

Eligibility also includes evidence of participation in the National Youth Service Corps. The selection will be based on academic merit, the development impact upon completion, and the quality of the study plan. Applications must be submitted through the Electronic Application System (EAS) portal and include scanned copies of passport photographs, academic transcripts, birth certificates, and admission letters from UK institutions. Completed applications must be submitted online by October 20, 2026.

Foreign certificates must be accompanied by official translation and evaluation. Prospective applicants are advised to consider Nigeria’s developmental priority areas when preparing their study proposals, which include education, health, economic growth, governance and conflict, climate and environment, water and sanitation, engineering, science and technology, food and nutrition, and humanitarian disasters and emergencies.
