Here’s how the iPhone Duo compares to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8

CNET has conducted a series of articles comparing the iPhone Duo to three current Android foldable devices, with a particular focus on Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8. The two devices share a similar passport-style aspect ratio and are priced just $100 apart, making it a compelling comparison.

Samsung's Fold 8 is slightly thinner both when folded and unfolded. However, it shares a common flaw with early versions of Samsung's foldables - vulnerability to damage from trapped dust and dirt. The Fold 8 has an IP48 rating, indicating it is fully waterproof but only partially protected against particles larger than a grain of sand. The iPhone Duo, on the other hand, boasts a full waterproof and dustproof rating.

Regarding the main cameras, both devices have a 48MP main and ultrawide camera setup. The Fold 8, however, has a 50MP main camera, while the Duo packs a 12MP selfie camera, compared to the Fold 8's 10MP. Samsung has also installed a 10MP selfie camera on the inner display, though Apple's resolution remains undisclosed. Based on available footage, it appears to be significantly lower in resolution, with Apple videos supporting up to 1080p but not 4K.

Apple hasn't disclosed the battery capacity for the Duo, but claims it can last up to 24 hours in typical use. The Fold 8 offers faster wired charging, providing 0% to 73% in just 30 minutes, whereas the Duo reaches a 50% charge in the same time frame. However, Apple takes the lead in wireless charging with full MagSafe support, whereas the Fold 8 lacks the necessary magnets for Qi2 wireless charging.

In practice, most users will likely remain within their existing ecosystem, whether Apple or Android. Comparisons across operating systems only become relevant if one device proves particularly appealing to entice users to switch. The iPhone Duo may have a better chance of attracting Android users drawn to the foldable form factor due to Apple's strong reputation and elegant user interface.

Samsung's history of durability issues could be a significant factor when purchasing an expensive device like the Fold 8, which costs $1900 compared to the Duo's $1999 price tag.
