Gwarube says Basic Education expanding access to early learning

Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube emphasizes the significance of early childhood education in securing positive educational outcomes for learners as they advance through their school years. The Department of Basic Education is currently expanding access to early learning programs, while concurrently striving to enhance the overall quality of care and education provided in these settings.

Gwarube's address to the Cape Town Press Club showcased progress made in aligning South Africa's basic education system with the Strong Foundations, Strong Futures Strategy. This strategy encompasses various initiatives, such as practitioner development, the provision of clearer curriculum guidance, and the implementation of more robust quality improvement measures.

Gwarube elaborated on the importance of a strong foundation in education, stating that a child's ability to read proficiently and perform mathematical operations lays the groundwork for success in more complex subjects like science, technology, and engineering. He noted that difficulties in these foundational areas can hinder a child's progress and limit their future opportunities.
