Gateway Turns the Chase Upside Down After Larson Victory

The NASCAR Cup Series Chase took an unexpected turn after Kyle Larson's dominant victory at the chaotic Enjoy Illinois 300 at Gateway on Sunday. Larson outpaced his teammate Alex Bowman in overtime by a mere 0.333 seconds, claiming his first win since 2024. The Hendrick Motorsports duo's 1-2 finish added to the dramatic finish at Gateway.

Gateway's race was anything but smooth, as it saw 18 cautions that consumed 87 laps. The field had to go through two overtime attempts to determine the winner. Brake problems plagued several Chase contenders, causing them to finish low in the standings. Bubba Wallace ended up in 14th, Christopher Bell in 19th, and Ryan Blaney had to settle for 35th due to brake issues. Chase Elliott managed to finish 31st.

Larson's strategic brilliance shone through as he seized every opportunity. Starting second alongside pole winner Joey Logano, Logano led the opening stage. Larson then took the second stage, staying near the front through repeated restarts and ultimately leading 80 laps. The No. 5 Chevrolet driven by Larson was unshakable until the overtime chaos ensued, where he held off Bowman and Logano to secure his first win since 2024.
