Former Queensland top cop Steve Gollschewski farewelled

Steve Gollschewski, the former top police officer of Queensland, was remembered for his extraordinary career and deep love for his family. Gollschewski, who retired in early 2026 as the state's most experienced officer, passed away this month at the age of 67. His daughter, Kirsten, revealed that she had always believed her father to be invincible, even after he was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.

Gollschewski's wife, Rebecca, described him as her opposite in many ways, but their shared love for each other transcended their differences. The police commissioner was known by various names, including Mr. Gollschewski, boss, sir, Mr. Fix-it, the COVID guy, or the guy who frequently appeared on TV during natural disasters. To his family and friends, he was simply Steve, Golly, Gorby, Dad, Pa, and Opa.

Rebecca expressed her gratitude to everyone involved in his care, his friends, and the Queensland Police Service for organizing today's ceremony. Gollschewski was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia last month for his nearly five decades of service. Queensland Governor Dr. Jeannette Young praised him, stating that it was an opportunity for Queensland to thank him for a great life.

Tasmania Police Commissioner Donna Adams described Gollschewski as a proud husband and father, always searching for solutions instead of excuses in his work. The man behind the uniform possessed an impressive combination of qualities, including intelligence, confidence, drive, and a strategic mindset. He never lost sight of the people behind the organization and the communities they served.
