Fish virus outbreak hits UK facilities

The UK has confirmed a Koi herpesvirus (KHV) outbreak at a fish-growing facility in Aspley Guise, Milton Keynes, and has imposed statutory controls to restrict the movement of aquatic animals. Koi herpesvirus is a serious viral disease affecting carp species and can lead to significant mortality rates. Infected fish may display necrotic patches on gills, rough skin, and sunken eyes, especially in water temperatures between 16 and 28 degrees Celsius.

The Fish Health Inspectorate (FHI) will monitor affected sites and enforce controls restricting the movement of aquatic animals, eggs, and gametes within a designated area. Contacting the FHI is advised if an outbreak is suspected, and the authorities urge fish owners and operators to prevent the introduction and spread of the disease.
