Fish virus outbreak hits UK facilities

The UK has identified an outbreak of Koi herpesvirus (KHV) at a fish-growing facility in Aspley Guise, Milton Keynes. The Fish Health Inspectorate (FHI) confirmed the outbreak on September 10. KHV is a serious viral disease affecting all varieties of common and ornamental carp species, potentially causing large-scale mortalities.

Infected fish may exhibit necrotic patches on gills, rough skin, and sunken eyes, especially in temperatures between 16 and 28 degrees Celsius. The disease has been listed in the UK since 2009 and is under surveillance. Fish owners and operators must notify the FHI immediately if they suspect an outbreak, displaying signs or deaths of carp or carp hybrids.

The FHI conducts a formal monitoring program after an outbreak, inspecting the site for disease evidence and ensuring compliance with statutory controls. Movement of aquatic animals, including eggs and gametes, into, out of, or within the designated area is restricted without the FHI's consent. Dead aquatic animals must be disposed of via approved methods for Category 2 animal-by-product waste.

The FHI must be notified of any recurrences or spread to other waters or facilities within the designated area. When laboratory testing confirms KHV disease, the FHI imposes statutory controls to limit disease spread, including movement controls, enhanced biosecurity, culling of fish, and cleaning and disinfecting premises. KHV outbreaks have been subject to statutory controls in the UK since 2007, and the UK maintains a surveillance program for the disease.
