Diphtheria: Zamfara extends school resumption by two weeks

The Zamfara State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has decided to push back the resumption of all public and private schools in the state by two weeks due to an advisory on the ongoing diphtheria situation, according to a public notice released on Sunday. The resumption date has been set for Monday, September 28, 2026, pending confirmation with the approved academic calendar.

Education authorities aim to use this extended period to enhance disease surveillance, contact tracing, verify vaccinations, conduct public sensitization, and implement other preventive measures before schools reopen. The ministry has instructed school proprietors, heads, and management boards to adhere to the revised resumption date. Additionally, schools have been advised to utilize this time for cleaning, decontamination of premises, and ensuring adequate handwashing facilities are available.

Parents and guardians have been urged to collaborate with health authorities in terms of vaccination, screening, and other recommended preventive measures.
