DAP reps pan Umno man’s lewd ‘joke’, apology offer

Two DAP representatives have criticized an Umno division leader's offensive "joke" involving Catholic clergy and his offer to apologize to the Christian community. Bukit Bendera MP Syerleena Abdul Rashid believes the "talk first, apologize later" mentality among politicians needs to cease. She called for political accountability that demands judgment before controversy, rather than contrition after the fact. Syerleena noted that the "cakap dulu, minta maaf kemudian" culture must stop.

Bilut assemblyman Lee Chin Chen said an offer of an apology if the joke insulted Christians lacked sincerity. He argued that a conditional apology shifted the issue onto how others interpreted the remarks, rather than acknowledging wrongdoing and accepting responsibility. Lee highlighted that if the situation were reversed and a politician made a sexually suggestive joke based on Islam, society would not accept excuses of misinterpretation or lack of malicious intent.

The assistant DAP national organising secretary emphasized that the offender would not only face public criticism but could also be reported, investigated, and potentially face enforcement action.

Syerleena stressed that while an apology was necessary, it should not become a "reset button" that allows people to forget the conduct that prompted it. Instead, those who apologize should reflect on why basic decency had to be pointed out to them by others. Lee also noted that there must be no double standard when it comes to respecting religion. If basic respect for one's own faith is demanded, the same respect must be extended to the faiths of others.
