Indonesia ferry search enters second day after vessel capsizes, 129 still missing

Pandeglang, Indonesia - Indonesian rescue teams have extended their search for eight individuals, comprising five journalists, on the ninth day since their speedboat vanished in the waters between Java and Sumatra, reported an official on Monday. The Indonesian journalists were on a mission to capture images and footage of Mount Anak Krakatau's eruption, which had erupted ash over cities and forced several airports to ground operations.

The group, consisting of two crew members and a guide, departed from a location west of Jakarta's capital on September 7's afternoon but lost communication with their vessel in the Sunda Strait shortly thereafter. The search and rescue operation's results remain "null," according to Al Amrad, head of the local search and rescue agency, who addressed reporters on Monday.

"We will continue the search for the following three days," he stated. Following a separate incident, a male body was discovered on Enggano island, located over 350 kilometers away from the volcano. Authorities are awaiting test results to ascertain if the body belongs to one of the missing individuals, stated Maruli Ahiles Hutapea, a local police spokesman.

The journalists worked for both national and international media outlets, including state news agency Antara, local website iNews, and Turkish state-run news agency Anadolu. Maritime accidents are commonplace in Southeast Asia due to factors such as lax safety regulations and unpredictable weather. Indonesia finds itself situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone of intense volcanic and seismic activity resulting from the convergence of tectonic plates.
