Carney pitches Canada to global investors amid trade war with Trump

Prime Minister Mark Carney has been actively strengthening Canada's ties to the European Union as a means of reducing dependence on the United States. Carney, who described Canada as "the most European of non-European countries," will attend a key EU event in Strasbourg this week, marking the first time a head of government will speak at the "State of the European Union" address.

Following that, he will meet with Britain's new Prime Minister Andy Burnham in Liverpool. Tobias Cremer, a German lawmaker, called Carney's visit a "tremendous symbol" for the strong economic and resource alignment between the two nations. Canada has been severely impacted by trade tensions with the US under President Donald Trump, and is actively seeking new economic partners.

With the EU also in need of diversifying its foreign relations, the two regions are looking to build stronger ties. Canada has already taken steps towards stronger collaboration with the EU, including joining its defence procurement programme and participating in Eurovision. Carney is currently hosting an EU-Canada summit in Montreal, where discussions on forming a "much stronger and deeper economic and security partnership" will take place.

While full EU membership for Canada is not a realistic prospect, given its geographical location and existing trade ties, the two regions are still exploring ways to deepen their economic and security partnership.
