CANAL+ and LaLiga sign landmark anti-piracy agreement

CANAL+ and LaLiga have joined forces in a significant anti-piracy agreement to combat the rising issue of sports content piracy across 50 countries. The strategic collaboration, announced in Paris and Madrid, merges the technology, intelligence, and enforcement capabilities of both organizations to disrupt illegal distribution networks.

This landmark deal, hailed as one of the most ambitious partnerships between a global broadcaster and a major sports organization, will see CANAL+ and LaLiga share intelligence, coordinate enforcement strategies, and swiftly act against illicitly distributing football content.

LaLiga president Javier Tebas emphasized that piracy poses one of the most significant challenges to the future of sports, necessitating collaboration among organizations. He highlighted that the partnership with CANAL+ aims to protect the value of football competitions, safeguard resources invested by broadcasters and clubs, and preserve the sport's future.

CANAL+ CEO Maxime Saada underscored the agreement's scale, stressing that fighting piracy is crucial for the entire sports ecosystem. He called on other entities within the sports, audiovisual, and creative industries to join efforts in combating illegal content distribution.

Both organizations argue that piracy extends beyond copyright infringement, as illegal broadcasts deprive football of resources essential for developing clubs, youth academies, and sporting infrastructure. They warn that consumers using illegal streaming services risk fraud, malware, and theft of personal data.

The agreement, which began in France and expanded to Europe, Africa, and Haiti, will now transition from content distribution to focusing on safeguarding the long-term value of sports broadcasting rights. With CANAL+ operating in over 70 countries and hosting more than 40 million subscribers, and LaLiga boasting a global social media following of 268 million, their joint efforts aim to create a safer digital environment while ensuring fans continue to access LaLiga football through reliable and high-quality services.
