Build institutions beyond elections, Shettima urges leaders

Vice President Kashim Shettima has called upon Nigerian leaders to establish enduring institutions and policies that will continue to benefit the populace beyond their own terms of office. Speaking at the unveiling of a book chronicling the life and legacy of Brigadier Musa Usman, a former military governor of the North-Eastern State, Shettima emphasized that true leadership is determined by the long-lasting impact on society, rather than merely political outcomes.

He stated, "We must build beyond the next elections and think beyond political boundaries. Leadership is measured by what continues to serve the people after the leader has left office."

Shettima presented the book as a tribute to a cadre of public servants who embraced their roles with honor and an unwavering commitment to institutional development and societal progress. He praised the authors, Mahmud Jega and Theophilus Aba, for preserving the memory of Musa Usman and his enduring contributions. The former North-Eastern State, established in 1967, encompassed a vast and varied landscape that now makes up six modern states.

Recognizing the region's ethnic, religious, and cultural diversity, Shettima underscored the necessity for inclusive and credible institutions that provide a sense of belonging to all communities.

Highlighting Musa Usman's legacy, Shettima pointed to the Musa Usman Secretariat in Maiduguri as a lasting testament to his tenure. He urged present-day leaders to revive the spirit of purposeful public service and apply it to pressing contemporary challenges, including reconstruction, agriculture, education, transportation, energy, industrialization, employment, environmental restoration, peace, and security.

Former National Security Adviser Babagana Monguno echoed Shettima's sentiments, noting that Musa Usman's tenure, despite the region's challenges, laid critical groundwork for national development. Monguno highlighted several projects initiated by Musa Usman, such as the Ashaka Cement Company, Savannah Sugar Factory, and the Maiduguri Specialist Hospital, emphasizing his foresight in projects like the Chad Basin Development Authority, which addressed the Lake Chad Basin's critical needs in agriculture and irrigation.

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babagana Kingibe described Musa Usman's leadership as collegial, commending his ability to work collaboratively and value diverse inputs. Kingibe highlighted Usman's exceptional qualities, including humility, vision, and the capacity to unite seasoned civil servants with youthful vigor.

He also praised Musa Usman's wife, Hadja Jummai Usman, for her exemplary role as a model of integrity and dedication. The book serves as a valuable resource for Nigerians to reflect on the nation's development trajectory and glean insights from Musa Usman's exemplary leadership.
