Brics's strength lies in being a bridge, not another bloc

The Brics group of nations has grown into a significant force in just a couple of decades, representing about a quarter of the world's nominal GDP and half of its population. This diverse coalition, comprising several major energy producers and consumers, holds considerable weight but also presents a unique challenge in maintaining cohesion.

The summit in New Delhi concluded with the leaders recognizing that the group's true strength lies in its role as a bridge, not as another geopolitical faction. This diversity, including countries with different political systems and strategic interests, makes it crucial for Brics to focus on fostering connections and consensus among its members rather than forming a rigid alliance.

The UAE exemplified this approach during the summit by advocating for restraint in the Iran conflict and facilitating communication between opposing sides. While the UAE's consensus-building efforts should not be overanalyzed, especially given the erosion of trust caused by Iran's recent actions, maintaining open channels of communication remains vital.

Dr Anwar Gargash, a diplomatic adviser to President Sheikh Mohamed, highlighted that the strategy behind Brics relies on "the twin pillars of deterrence and diplomacy," emphasizing that both elements are essential for effective functioning. This philosophy goes beyond addressing Iran's complex situation and provides Brics with a platform to promote its principle of strategic autonomy in foreign policy.

Despite members' differing viewpoints, Brics' ability to maintain relationships across geopolitical divides and include the concerns of the Middle East in a growing, influential forum is a valuable asset. As long as the organization continues to engage with countries outside its borders, it can enhance its relevance in an increasingly fragmented world.
