Body of missing runner found in South Africa

South African police have announced the discovery of Elizabeth Moselakgomo's body, the missing jogger who went missing during a routine run last week. Her remains were identified Monday following a discovery on Saturday east of Johannesburg. Moselakgomo is one of five women whose bodies have been found in the same Kempton Park area, all half-naked and bruised.

Police have not linked the deaths to a serial killer but issued a public warning due to the similarities. A jogger familiar with Moselakgomo through their running club expressed concern over the discovery of the five bodies, stating that it makes every woman in South Africa feel unsafe. The police urge women to avoid walking or running alone, especially in isolated areas.

South Africa has one of the highest rates of gender-based violence (GBV) in the world, with women being killed at a rate five times higher than the global average. The body of Moselakgomo was found on Saturday night, badly bruised and partially clothed. Another woman's half-naked body was discovered about 15 miles away the same day, and a passer-by alerted police just hours after Moselakgomo's body was found.

One arrest has been made in connection with the first discovery, and the suspect remains in police custody. The police have established a task force to investigate the murders. Tributes have poured in for Moselakgomo, affectionately known as "Tsontso" by locals, and South Africans have expressed their shared fear and anxiety. Advocacy groups have criticized the police response, calling for better implementation of existing laws and urging citizens to pressure authorities to address the issue.

Moselakgomo's family thanked the public for their support and praised her daughter for alerting the authorities about her disappearance.
