Angry Syrians hit the streets in protest over sharply rising fuel prices

Syrians took to the streets on Monday for a second day of protests against the government's unexpected decision to raise fuel prices. The demonstrations, which began in northern cities like Hama, Khan Sheikhoun, and Maarat Al Numan, saw crowds block major roads and set fires in outrage. One resident in Idlib described the sudden announcement as a "shock," explaining that the price hikes would have a significant impact on daily living costs.

The government raised diesel prices by up to 40 percent and petrol by 28 percent, a move that caught many Syrians off guard, especially as 90 percent of the population lives below the poverty line. Syria's government claimed the temporary price increase was necessary to address a temporary gap between the cost of securing fuel and its domestic selling prices, citing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, shipping routes, and higher transport and insurance costs due to the US-Iran war.

Despite being an oil and gas producer, Syria's reliance on imports has increased due to ongoing maintenance at the Baniyas oil refinery, which reduces domestic refining capacity and necessitates additional imports to meet domestic demand. Energy Minister Mohammed Al Bashir stated that the broader impact comes from higher international costs of refined products, shipping, insurance, and supply. Fuel is vital for Syria's economic recovery after 14 years of civil war.
