Andrews responds to Trump's united Ireland comments

A Fianna Fáil MEP, Barry Andrews, has responded to US President Donald Trump's involvement in the united Ireland debate by quipping, "Mr Trump has decided to get involved, what could possibly go wrong?". The comments came during a European Parliament discussion in Strasbourg, France, focusing on various topics. Andrews referenced Trump's remarks during his recent visit to Ireland.

A Fianna Fáil MEP, known for his criticism of Trump's presidency, responded matter-of-factly to the President's involvement. He noted that people concerned with Ireland's future should not take Trump's comments seriously, suggesting they are not as "orange" as they appear. Andrews also pointed out that British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has suggested that a referendum on a united Ireland is currently off the table, as Downing Street believes the majority of people do not want a referendum at the moment.

However, Burnham later clarified his remarks. Andrews emphasized that the British government's insight into potential referendum outcomes is uncertain, highlighting the importance of preparing for both the potential referendum and its aftermath, as evidenced by the fallout from the Brexit referendum.
