ADC raises alarm over electoral officers’ redeployment in Rivers

The African Democratic Congress (ADC), representing Rivers State, has expressed concern over the redeployment of seven Electoral Officers by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). In a statement, ADC's Publicity Secretary, Chizy Enyi, raised questions about potential political interference in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.

ADC acknowledged INEC's authority to deploy and redeploy personnel, but emphasized that such decisions should be transparent and free from political influence, especially in Rivers State. Allegations suggest that some redeployed officers were deemed unsuitable due to their perceived unwillingness to compromise professional independence or obey instructions beyond INEC's lawful authority.

ADC also claimed that certain postings and redeployments may have been influenced by individuals associated with the "Rainbow Coalition". While not presenting these allegations as facts, ADC urged INEC to investigate and provide clear answers. The party demanded confirmation of the redeployments, details on authorization and reasons, and criteria used for posting replacements.

ADC also sought clarification on whether any political group or individual had made representations about these personnel moves, particularly in Obio/Akpor. The party warned that recent political statements regarding the 2027 elections in Rivers State, along with unexplained changes involving electoral personnel, could cast doubt on the election's integrity.

ADC called for safeguards against placing politically partisan individuals in sensitive electoral roles and a mechanism for political parties and stakeholders to raise documented concerns about neutrality. The ADC urged INEC officials to investigate the allegations, reassure Rivers residents that no political actor would interfere with the 2027 elections, and called on various institutions to monitor election preparations closely.
