A New Equal-Area Map for Interactive Computer Use

The United Nations recently approved a non-binding resolution encouraging the use of the Equal Earth projection instead of the Mercator projection for maps. The Mercator projection, while suitable for zoomable maps due to its conformal nature, distorts country sizes disproportionately at a global scale. In response, an alternative map is presented that maintains equal-area properties at a global scale while seamlessly transitioning to the Mercator projection upon zooming.

This map is defined by a simple mathematical formula and offers improved appearance for many countries when viewed at a zoomed-out scale. However, Europe, North America, and Australia/New Zealand may experience some distortion. The map utilizes two constants, a=49 and b=45, which were selected through trial and error to achieve visually pleasing results.

The design aims to minimize distortion and provide a more accurate representation of country shapes while maintaining an aspect ratio of 2:1.
