21 killed in a crash on the N1 in the Klein Karoo

A devastating crash on the N1 highway in the Klein Karoo region has claimed the lives of 21 people and left three others seriously injured, according to Western Cape Traffic authorities. The collision, which occurred on Sunday night between the towns of Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka, involved three vehicles - two minibus taxis and a standard car.

Muneera Allie, a spokesperson for the Western Cape Mobility Department, confirmed the details of the incident. She stated that the N1 is presently closed in both directions as emergency and traffic teams continue to respond to the scene. Allie noted that the only viable alternate route for motorists is via Prince Albert Road Station, following the R407 towards the N12 and then continuing on the N12 towards Beaufort West, which adds approximately 200km to the journey.

Allie urged drivers to steer clear of the affected area if possible, emphasized the need for extreme caution, warned of significant delays, and instructed motorists to follow the guidance of traffic officials and emergency personnel on-site.
