URIIS 2026 brings university research closer to market

The University Research and Innovation Investment Summit (URIIS) 2026 will convene from September 21-23 at the World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur. This event, organized by the higher education ministry and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), aims to connect university research with market-ready solutions.

From the internet and artificial intelligence to healthcare and energy, university research has influenced numerous technologies shaping modern life. However, translating academic discoveries into marketable products demands more than a good idea. It requires funding, industry know-how, and a clear grasp of the target market.

URIIS serves as a bridge, uniting all 20 public universities, investors, and businesses to discuss how Malaysian research can be translated into viable commercial applications. Over 200 technologies with investment potential will be showcased, providing a platform for researchers to present their work to potential investors and industry partners.

To attract investment, research must address a clear problem, meet demand, and be producible at a scale that ensures commercial viability. Industry partners can aid researchers in understanding practical requirements, from production costs to regulatory considerations. URIIS's programme includes investment pitching arenas, research and industry feedback sessions, and specialized training workshops.

The summit will explore 12 niche clusters reflecting opportunities in technology, healthcare, energy, food security, and other sectors with commercial and societal potential. These clusters include semiconductors, nanotechnology, digital finance, agricultural technology, life sciences, health technology, and pharmaceuticals, along with sustainable energy, advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and robotics.

By linking research and innovation to real-world challenges, URIIS aims to create opportunities for technology transfer, collaborative research, commercialization, and new funding sources for universities. For businesses, the event offers access to emerging technologies and talent, potentially enhancing productivity, developing new products, and creating employment opportunities in Malaysia.
