Turkish authorities launch crackdown on LGBTQ+, HIV support groups

Turkish authorities launched a crackdown on LGBTQ+ groups and individuals early Sunday morning, detaining dozens of members and raiding popular hangouts. This escalation of hostility toward LGBTQ+ groups comes in the lead-up to elections and targets nine associations and 13 businesses. Justice Minister Akin Gurlek announced the investigation, stating it was to "protect children, the institution of the family, and public order" in accordance with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's 10-year executive order.

The raids, which began at 1 a.m., targeted both current and former members of prominent LGBTQ+ rights and HIV awareness groups. The organizations' websites were also blocked. The Human Rights Association condemned the raids, calling them a "political operation aimed at forcing society into a monolithic family model and purging LGBTI+ and independent civil society."

The ruling Justice and Development Party, known for its conservative stance, has been increasingly vocal against LGBTQ+ groups, banning Istanbul Pride in 2015 and violently dispersing any attempted gatherings. This summer, an LGBTQ+ cruise ship was refused permission to dock in Turkey.
