Trump administration reluctant to slow AI, Democrats see urgent need

The Trump administration has resisted calls for stringent regulation of artificial intelligence (AI), yet has established a voluntary system for reviewing advanced AI models without disclosing its operational details. This stance emerges amid growing concerns over the rapid advancement of AI technology and the potential risks it poses to humanity.

During a recent visit to Ireland, President Donald Trump expressed skepticism about the negative impacts of AI, warning of threats that may not materialize. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson cautioned that hasty regulatory measures could place the United States at a disadvantage in the ongoing "arms race" with China for AI supremacy, emphasizing that such a loss would threaten every American.

Meanwhile, leading AI companies, including Anthropic and xAI, have advocated for a deliberate slowdown in AI development to better understand associated risks, particularly the phenomenon of recursive self-improvement, where AI systems could autonomously enhance their own capabilities, potentially surpassing human control. This proposal was echoed by xAI's Elon Musk and OpenAI's Sam Altman.

However, Trump administration officials, such as Kevin Hassett, Director of the National Economic Council, have contended that the greater risk lies in AI falling into the hands of malicious actors rather than the technology itself. Despite these divergent views, a CBS poll published Sunday indicated that 64% of Americans anticipate AI to reduce employment opportunities in the US, signaling a significant concern among the populace regarding AI's implications for employment.

Democrats have demanded urgent action to address AI challenges, with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries asserting that Republicans have shirked their responsibilities. The controversy has intensified just weeks before the midterm elections, with AI data center expansion emerging as a contentious campaign issue.
