Sara Larsen under fire over Charlie Kirk cake

Student Sara Larsen from the University of Utah has been under scrutiny after facing intense backlash over a photo of her posing with a cake that read "Happy Kirkiversary," a reference to the anniversary of conservative activist Charlie Kirk's death. Larsen came under fire as the image circulated widely on social media platforms.

In an attempt to address her actions, Larsen expressed regret for celebrating or contributing to the celebration of Kirk's death in her X account. She acknowledged that the joke she made about Kirk's murder was wrong and sincerely apologized for it, emphasizing that nobody should be murdered or persecuted for their speech.

The controversy has sparked a disagreement between student political groups at the University of Utah. The College Democrats accused the University of Utah College Republicans of publicly shaming and cyberbullying Larsen following her public apology. The College Democrats claimed that the photograph received over six million views and thousands of hateful comments, targeting not only Larsen but also her family, including attempts to expose their personal information.

They described the online backlash as "cyberbullying" and alleged that the harassment forced Larsen to delete several social media accounts and prevented her from attending campus.

On the other hand, the University of Utah College Republicans have also received criticism for reposting the photo and failing to remove it despite Larsen's apology. The College Democrats argued that the College Republicans did not remove the image, which allowed the online harassment to continue and negatively impact Larsen's life.
