Ruto mourns Dr David Silverstein, Moi’s longtime personal physician

President William Ruto has mourned the passing of Dr David Silverstein, a longtime personal physician to former President Daniel arap Moi and a pioneering cardiologist in Kenya. In a condolence message posted on Facebook on September 13, 2026, Ruto described Silverstein as a distinguished medical practitioner whose work in cardiology significantly shaped modern medicine in Kenya.

The president expressed his deepest condolences to Silverstein's family, friends, and the medical community following the physician's death at the age of 82.

Ruto praised Silverstein for his exceptional service to the country and his contributions to the advancement of medicine. He highlighted Silverstein's lengthy tenure as Moi's personal physician, spanning more than four decades starting in 1977. Former Baringo Senator and KANU leader Gideon Moi characterized Silverstein as a compassionate physician who deeply cared for his patients, emphasizing the unique bond between the two men.

Beyond his role as a cardiologist, Silverstein was a trailblazer in Kenya's medical sector. He was instrumental in establishing the country's first cardiac catheterisation laboratory at Kenyatta National Hospital. In addition to his medical work, he served as a lecturer, training and guiding medical professionals throughout his decades-long career. Silverstein chronicled his medical career and his relationship with Moi in his memoir, Heartbeat: An American Cardiologist in Kenya.
