One person dead and 102 rescued from ferry that went missing off Indonesia's Java

One individual lost their life while 30 remain missing after a ferry capsized off the coast of Vanuatu, according to the South Pacific nation's government. The MV Matui, carrying more than 40 passengers and crew members, departed from the island of Santo for Ambae island on Friday, but failed to reach its destination due to treacherous sea conditions.

Prime Minister Jotham Napat expressed condolences to the bereaved families in a statement released on Sunday. Fifteen people have been reported alive, while one body has been recovered, leaving 30 individuals unaccounted for. An investigation into possible negligence is underway, with strong winds, disregard for marine warnings, and possible overloading of the vessel cited as contributing factors.

The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Noumea, New Caledonia is aiding the search, and a French Armed Forces aircraft was deployed on Sunday morning to support the operation. Initial findings indicate that 12 people were spotted on Sunday morning. Members of Parliament for Luganville, Matai Seremaiah, are actively participating in the search efforts, focusing on the southeast coast where currents may have transported survivors to safer waters.
