One dead, 30 missing after ferry sinks off Vanuatu

A ferry disaster off the coast of Vanuatu has resulted in one fatality and the disappearance of 30 passengers and crew members, according to the South Pacific nation's government. The MV Matui, carrying more than 40 individuals from Santo to Ambae island, capsized in rough seas on Friday but failed to reach its destination. Prime Minister Jotham Napat expressed condolences for the families affected, stating that search and rescue efforts are ongoing.

Fifteen people have been confirmed alive, while one body has been recovered, leaving 30 individuals still missing. An investigation into possible negligence, such as overloading and disregarding warnings about strong winds, has been initiated. Assistance with the search is being provided by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Noumea, New Caledonia, which has located 12 people so far.

The member of parliament for Luganville, Matai Seremaiah, is coordinating search efforts, particularly focusing on the southeast coast where survivors may have been swept away by currents.
