One killed, others trapped in Enugu building collapse

A building under construction in Enugu State collapsed early Sunday morning, resulting in one fatality and leaving others trapped beneath the debris. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the incident, which took place at around 6 am on September 13, 2026, at Independence Layout. NEMA spokesperson Manzo Ezekiel announced the details in a statement on X. Director-General Mrs Zubaida Umar immediately dispatched an Emergency Rescue Team to the scene and initiated coordination with relevant stakeholders.

Upon arrival, it was reported that several individuals were trapped under the rubble, prompting the rescue team to commence search and rescue operations. The team utilized an excavator to assist in the removal of debris, successfully recovering the lifeless body of one male victim by 11:20 am. Rescue efforts continued as of the time of the statement, with the operation being coordinated by NEMA along with the Enugu State Emergency Management Agency, Nigeria Police Force, Enugu State Fire and Rescue Service, Enugu State Capital Territory Development Authority, and the Enugu State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.
